These Are 6 Of The Best Corvette Ever Made
Edited by Christian Parodi
Cars as musical instruments. Some are capable of playing goosebumps songs and the best ones even manage to echo overseas, as it happened for Corvette which evokes a timeless myth born in 1953 and which has not been afraid to reinvent itself, transforming its identity just like the greatest icons dare. Now at its eighth generation, Corvette is the image of a stars and stripes sports car that through its previous seven generations has given birth to an endless array of versions, all perfectly capable of playing a sweet and melancholy song the moment before and a hard rock tune the next. Turn up the volume, it’s time to fish from the packed family album and celebrate 6 of the most extraordinary Corvettes ever made.
CORVETTE L72 (1966)
The second generation – aptly named C2 – still boasts one of the most unmistakable lines in automotive history. Angular, yet capable of being both elegant and distinctly sporty, it seems to clash with the softer and more sinuous lines of the 60s. Available with different power steps, the L72 is the maximum expression of the concept of aggression on tarmac. Under the hood there is a 427 Big-Block V8 that produces 425 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, pure pleasure for all five senses.
CORVETTE C3 STINGRAY (1973)
The C3 was produced from 1967 to 1982 and brought with it an exceptional stylistic transformation. The lines become softer, the overall look is that of a coupe with a large rounded front bonnet, driver’s seat almost caressing the ground and a truncated tail characterized by two pairs of round headlights. The Stingray accentuates the intention to make the now legendary muscle car even more inclined to the world of grand touring, all thanks to a body kit made more muscular by the wedge on the bonnet, a sportier setting and that especially in the ZR1 and ZR2 offered a performance package that starting from 425 horsepower included, among other things, a reinforced transmission, increased brakes, aluminum radiator and completely revised suspension for a better drivability.
CORVETTE C4 ZR1 (1990)
The ZR1 suffix has always symbolized performance brought to the highest levels. Chief engineer Dave McLellan argued that it was like hitting everyone in the face since they could do things others could only dream of. The C4 ZR1 was no exception and in fact had a V8 LT5 capable of dropping 380 horsepower to the ground at 6,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 500 Nm. 0-100 kph in 4 and a half seconds and it was just 1990.
CORVETTE C5 Z06 (2002)
Another turning point, another leap forward. The C5 generation will not be remembered for its superfine driving precision or impeccable finishing, but when it comes to stepping on the throttle there is nothing better than rear tyres always ready to sign the asphalt and the V8 of the C5 Z06, which with its 405 hp and 540 Nm of torque ensured a 0-100 of just 4 seconds.
CORVETTE C6 ZR1 (2009)
Justifiably regarded by many as the modern Corvette that has most shone the spotlight of Europe on the American legend, the C6 ZR1 overturns every concept of performance and delivers sidereal speeds on everyday roads. Once again everything is taken to the extreme and to confirm the seriousness of the project we have extensive use of carbon fiber panels, a polycarbonate window positioned in the middle of the engine hood that shows the intercooler and carbon ceramic braking system. Its 6.2-liter LS9 V8 delivers 638 horses and performance figures say 3.9 seconds for the 0-100 with a top speed of 330 kph.
CORVETTE C7 ZR1 (2019)
As the years go by, Corvette seems to add horsepower instead of wrinkles. Lots of them. The C7 generation ZR1 is pure madness. Starting with an aesthetic that seems borrowed from the racetrack in a way that Corvette had never dared to, it soon becomes clear that we are dealing with a super sports car that knows no compromises. Let’s start with some numbers, with the 6.2 V8 LT5 which thanks to an optimized supercharger now unleashes 755 horsepower and 970 Nm of torque. With an overall weight of around 1,600 kg, the C7 ZR1 is not a grand tourer as we have known it until now, but a lethal weapon for curbs. If you are looking for romance on wheels, this is not for you.
If you happen to own one of these super cars, such as the Corvette C5, it’s never a bad time to not just tune up the engine but also the exterior and interior of the car. With custom C5 corvette accessories you can enhance your experience with the car and make it your own.
