TIRES | All-Season Tires: They Worth The Money?
Personally I do not like half-measures and when I find myself talking about safety, I become even more drastic. Regarding four seasons tires, however, I believe that it is necessary to broaden one’s vision of things and first of all evaluate the type of use that would be made of the aforementioned tires, without obviously neglecting the kind of car on which they should be fitted. For example, if you drive a Radical I can hardly believe that you will need to reach your winter cabin on top of the mountains, so where with a specific sports car, winter rubber is not important, even the one that can let you go around the whole year would not be taken into consideration. The same, albeit with due proportions, applies to more traditional sports cars. The purpose of winter tires is in fact to allow better traction and offer safety on snow or icy surfaces, but the fact remains that to make the most of a car’s performance, there is nothing better than a summer tire, especially if with a soft compound and with semi-slick tendencies, where allowed.
The all-season tires make sense especially for saving some money and for the possibility of not changing tires over twelve months, if you live in an area with non-significant climatic differences between summer and winter and mainly for cars that allow daily use and not strictly related to hairpin blasts. So the answer is both yes and no, but always depending on the context in which we will analyze them.
We have selected 2 tires that represent the best options in the four-season rubber field, still interesting for what concerns sports and luxury cars.
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT A/S 3
It is probably one of the most incredible tires we have ever been able to try, because thanks to the TriFusion formula that includes 3 different compounds linked together, it allows excellent grip on both wet and dry surfaces. Braking figures are impressive, while the low rolling coefficient confers a considerable longevity of the rubber, confirming the possibility of being used at its best all year round.
PIRELLI P ZERO NERO ALL SEASON
Known for its remarkable qualities as a summer tire, the All-Season version of the P Zero Nero makes the most of the asymmetrical tread design which also features a double vertical profile in the middle, ideal for accentuating the responsiveness of the tire, both when braking and accelerating as well.
